La semana pasada tuvo lugar en Barcelona la presentación del libro INNOVACIÓN ABIERTA, traducción al Español de la obra OPEN INNOVATION. TheNewImperativeforCreatingandProfitingfromTechnology, del profesor Henry Chesbrough.

Desde mi punto de vista se trata de una gran noticia, no solo por la presencia del profesor Chesbrough en Barcelona (era la primera vez que le escuchaba en directo, y como no podía ser de otra forma, … chapeau!), sino también porque la traducción de esta obra permitirá acercar un poco mas el Open Innovation a las empresas españolas y de los países de habla hispana, especialmente las pequeñas y medianas empresas.

De la propuesta del Profesor Chesbrough me viene a la cabeza la siguiente reflexión: Para hacer open innovation primero hay que hacer closed innovation. Que quiero decir con esto?

Que para las grandes corporaciones el open innovation es el camino natural a seguir dentro de sus estrategias de innovación. Y es el camino natural no porque tengan grandes departamentos de I+D y recursos (que los tienen), sino porque entienden y gestionan la innovación como un proceso estratégico y han establecido los mecanismos y metodologías para ello (closed innovation).

Humildemente creo que este es el reto pendiente de las pequeñas y medianas empresas.  Y también el reto de todos los que estamos involucrados de una forma u otra en el mundo de la innovación (consultores, intermediarios de innovación, administración, centros de investigación, …). Después, el open innovation será también el camino natural a seguir por todas ellas.

Finalmente felicitar a KIM BCN y la Cámara de Comercio de Barcelona que han hecho posible la traducción de este libro.

Finally, the first book on Open innovation translated into Spanish

Last week there was the presentation of the book entitled INNOVACIÓN ABIERTA, the Spanish translation of OPEN INNOVATION. The New Imperative for Creating and Profiting from Technology, by Professor Henry Chesbrough in Barcelona.

From my point of view this is great news, not only because Professor Chesbrough was present in Barcelona (this was the first time that I have heard him live. There can be no other way… chapeau!), but also because the translation of this book will allow Spanish and Spanish speaking companies to get to know Open Innovation a little better, particularly small and medium sized companies.

Professor Chesbrough’s proposal leads me to the following thought: In order to have open innovation first one must have closed innovation. What does this mean?

For large corporations open innovation is the natural path to follow within its innovation strategies. It is the natural path not because they have large R+D departments and resources (which they have), but because they understand and manage innovation as a strategic process and have set up mechanisms and methodologies for it (closed innovation).

I humbly believe that this is the remaining challenge for small and medium companies. It is also the challenge for all of us involved in one form or another in the world of innovation (consultants, innovation intermediaries, administration, research centres, …). Afterwards, open innovation shall also be the natural path to follow for all of them.
